When the whole world was celebrating Father’s day, Chicagoland witnessed another spectacular event conducted by Chicago Andhra Association where hundreds of Telugu people cherished the back home memories. Taste of Andhra Heritage and Culture were bought to Chicago, when Chicago Andhra Association fondly known as ‘CAA family’ celebrated Vanabhojanalu – A Garden picnic in Pure authentic Andhra Style .
Crowd consisted of 500+ People from Both states of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, who enjoyed the hospitality, particularly during a Sahapankthi Bhojanam, a traditional way of taking Lunch back home – In a Banana Leaf, with Pulihora and other Andhra Style Curries were served by Hosts. Not only that the Kids were thrilled to eat in banana Leaf, they were also interested to learn why and how would someone eat on that. All the food planning was led by Anu Gampala, Suresh Sanakkayala and Sujatha Appalaneni and serving was led by Vani Dittakavi, Sunitha Rachapalli and Neelima Boddu. Guests also enjoyed the fresh, tasty and hot corn and Chicken off the grill and this effort was led by Srihari Jasti, Srikrishna Matukumalli and Sailesh Maddi.
Few elders who came to visit their Kith and Kin, appreciated the fact that while People in India are leaning towards Buffet Lunch, CAA’s efforts to restore the culture for next Generation are commendable. They said, this gave an opportunity to explain few traditions to their Grandchildren. Hosts were thrilled when few adults stood up themselves and volunteered to serve the lunch.
Several CAA members brought variety pre-cooked dishes especially focused on Dad’s luncheon items for food competition and showed their Love on Dads. This competition was led by Sahiti Kotta, Pavithra Karumuri and Malleswari Pedamallu.
While people were seen playing, regular Ball games before lunch, Post Noon witnessed few games that were planned to be played by Fathers and Kids. Most kids were seen dragging their Dads to play, while mothers were cheering for their husbands and kids. All the games were planned and ran by Sandhya Appalaneni, SaiRavi Suribhotla and Hema Tatineni.
The snack bazar in the evening witnessed crowds eating the Andhra varieties, but the highlight of the event was a Cool Masala Yogurt Drink (Majjiga) made in Traditional Andhra style with Ginger and Coriander. After playing in Hot sun, people enjoyed the cool yogurt drink to relax. Fruits like Watermelon and Banana were also made available for a health evening snack and coordinated by Raj Potluri. A special father’s Day Cake was cut by a few Senior citizens including CAA Senior Citizen BoD Ramana Murthy Yadavalli, respecting their presence in the event.
