Bloomington, Minnesota July 26, 2014
Telugu Association of Minnesota (TEAM) organizes Summer Picnic – Vanabhojanalu during July of every year. TEAM started organizing summer picnic with a goal to bring all Telugu speaking people of Minnesota together and spend a memorable afternoon savoring nice food, playing games and fostering friendship. With a lot of visiting parents during summer, this picnic also became a venue for visiting parents / senior citizens to meet other Telugu families and have a good time. This is a free event for Telugu speaking families living and visiting Minnesota. This year venue was Hyland Lake Park in Bloomington. Hyland Lake Park is as scenic retreat in the heart of Bloomington with breathtaking prairie landscapes, lakes as well as large play areas.
With severe cold winter this year, everyone was looking forward to summer and Telugu people were no exception. TEAM summer picnic is always an event Telugu speaking people of Minnesota look forward to during summer.
It was a nice 80 degree Fahrenheit temperature and cool breeze from the adjacent lakes gave a feel of a large air conditioner. TEAM President Durga Prasad Kunapareddy cordially invited Telugu people coming to the picnic. He said it’s a privilege to all TEAM executives and TEAM members to see parents visiting from India having a good time meeting other families. Over 700 people (visiting Parents, Senior Citizens, Adults and kids) participated in this event. This was one of the biggest summer picnic gathering in recent time and says a lot about unity of Telugu speaking people in Minnesota.
Around noon, lunch was ready and everyone was hungry to eat bisibela bath, yogurt rice, pickle and kesari specially made for this event by Copper Pot Restaurant, Minneapolis. Kids loved yogurt rice and kesari while adults enjoyed the tasty food. Fresh Sweet corn was grilled and served following lunch along with cut watermelon. Ice cream and hot masala tea kept everyone awake after a nice meal and cool breeze from the lake. Food arrangement was wonderfully done by TEAM food Secretary with support from all TEAM executive committee members and served by volunteers from Telugu families who attended the event.
A lot of games were conducted by TEAM organizers for kids, adults, women and parents. A few games played are creative song game, balloon Cho Cho, Nature scavenger hunt, Shape up, passing game, bombing the city, bingo and lemon and spoon. Lemon and spoon was enjoyed by kids of all ages as this is the only time they get to play this game in US. Adults and parents enjoyed creative song game which refreshed memories from back home. Games were concluded with bingo where each family with their kids relaxed and enjoyed the game.
TEAM Vice-President Srikanth Kammojjala thanked everyone for taking time to attend this picnic and making it a grand success. He specially thanked Narendra Andalkovil and Venkat Chandra for coordinating logistics of the this event. He expressed special thanks to TEAM Board for supporting during this event and to all TEAM executive and extended committee members for making this event a success. TEAM executive and extended committee members did final cleanup and joined their families for a quiet evening with reminiscence from summer picnic. A very successful event for TEAM in year 2014.
